Remains of an old homestead, probably of the preserve's namesake. The fireplace is made of brick and the chimney is made of brick, stone and cement. The only other part of the house remaining are some cement steps located several feet to the SW.
Captain Forster Hammock Preserve is located 1 mile south of CR 510 (Wabasso Causeway) on Jungle Trail. It is open 8AM to sunset every day. The 110 acre county-managed preserve was acquired in the 1990s and opened to the public in 2003. The are restrooms at the parking area and several hiking trails.
The Preserve's namesake is Frank Forster who was born in 1856 in Hamburg, Germany. He ran away at a young age to become a sailor (hence "Captain") and built a home in Orchid in the 1880s. He became a farmer and postmaster, opened a one room school at his homestead, encouraged settlement in the Orchid/Wabasso area, and helped Henry Flagler acquire land for the Florida East Coast Railroad.
