Sperryville, Virginia is a small town that sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and borders Shenandoah National Park. An old abandoned wooden building with a tin roof stands on a hillside just outside the Park boundary in an area known as Jenkins Hollow. Jenkins Hollow, which predates the establishment of Shenandoah NP in 1935, can be accessed from Woodward Rd. (CO 600).

The shack is being reclaimed by Mother Nature and the area is overgrown. There is a large shard of a ceramic pot and several canning jars on the grounds. (Please do not remove artifacts. They aid archaeologists in reconstructing the history of an area.) There is no road or trail that leads to the building. There is a nearby utility easement, but bushwhacking is still necessary. It is not recommended to visit in spring or summer, because of poisonous snakes and ticks. (Beware, ticks exist in the winter too.)

Many mountain families were displaced from their homes when their land became part of a national park. Traces of homesites and roads can still be found within the Park's boundaries including Jenkins Hollow, which is technically on Park land. Perhaps this old shack was once the home of one the families that dotted this mountainside.
