This statue depicts a 1930s era boy reading his comic "Uncle Pete and Kevs Sunbeam Weakly(sic)". He is reading the story of the Pilgrim Fathers. The spirit of the Pilgrim Fathers appears behind him, turning the pages of the comic. He seems surprised to see what the future holds. The boy is clearly interested in the New World - he is wearing a Sheriff badge.

The Pilgrim's coat pocket is brimming with things - it contains a book entitled 1620 A-Z, a crucifix, a fish, a lobster, a button and something that looks like silverwork. The accompanying noticeboard says "A bronze pocket has been fashioned into the Pilgrim's coat and it is said that any visitor from the New World who places a small object therein will find a new and more rewarding path in life"

A Staffordshire bull terrier is jumping up as if also trying to join in the reading

The significance of the Pilgrim Fathers to the locality is that the Mayflower set sail from Rotherhithe in 1620. See WMDH0G and WMDGRX
