The Plaza de Colón (Columbus Square) is a popular meeting place and venue for events (the tents were for a book fair) in the eastern part of Old San Juan. In 1893, it was given its present name to honor Christopher Columbus on the 400th anniversary of his discovery of Puerto Rico. The square is north and uphill from the cruise ship port. To reach the square from the south you must pass this interesting and rather complex fountain.
At plaza level four streams of water emerge from the middle of the back wall of the fountain and cascade down a step and then a three foot wall into a a large semi-circular basin. The basin contains a circular bowl. Water rises up through the middle of the bowl and overflows the bowl into the large basin. Jets of water shoot up from the edge of the basin towards the bowl. On either side of the main fountain water cascades down a series of four steps and merges with the water in the basin. Four light poles with globe lights rise above the fountain to frame a statue of Christopher Columbus.
The fountain, plaza and statue are well worth your attention while visiting Old San Juan.
