The sign is carved into a six foot tall rough piece of Alabama marble.

Two miles north of this spot was the Indian Town Cosa visited by De Soto July 16, 1540
This stone erected by The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Alabama 1936
Although St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest permanently occupied European settlement in the United States (1565), Childersburg (originally Cosa) may be the oldest continuously occupied town in the United States.
(The small stone in front is a much more recent addition that reads: "All gave some, Some gave all, Dedicated to American Veterans")
