Between the Odell Plaza office building at 525 N Tryon Street and the First United Methodist Church at 501 N Tryon Street, there is some public art from the Bank of America Collection that places several bear statues in a very natural setting at the entrance of a green space between and behind the buildings. The sculpture is truly playful in its design and peaceful in its placement.
The informational plaque expresses it best that is near the base of one of the metal trees. It reads:
"At Peace, At Play
by Joseph Miller
18' high x 21' long x 4' deep
Painted mild steel, 1998
Bank of America Art Collection (#19340)
The oak trees of At Peace, At Play, along with a variety of animals found in North Carolina, form a welcoming arch to mark the entrance to a peaceful green space.
Thesculpture was forged and fabricated from bars and flat sheets of mild steel, using heat and hammer. No molds or casting were used in the construction. Many of the hand tools necessary for the project were made by the artist. At Peace, At Play was commissioned by Bank of America in 1998.
Mr Miller lives and works in Brasstown, North Carolina."
Two metal trees branch toward each other. In one tree, the mother bear rests in the crotch of the trunk and a mature branch. In the other tree, whose branch arches toward the other tree, has two young bear cubs climbing the trunk and out onto the arched branch. Smaller animals share the tree with the bears. On another branch of the tree the cubs are in, a squirrel is found. At the base of the tree with the mother bear, an opossum is curled up in a large knothole in the base.
