This pillory have been in use for many centuries, between the church and centre of Orton.

This small patch of grass with the pillory, is beside the old roadway, with many passers by.
In 1697, on July 13, Edward Addison was convicted of petty larceny, and he was whipped in Appleby and then held in Orton pillory for two hours. The next record of their use is 1700 for petty larceny, where "Margaret the wife of John Thornburrow of Tebay" was held for one hour. Source (visit link)
