This marker for the
21st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry, is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. It marker the position of the 21st at 11:00, on September 20, 1863. This is one of two markers to the 21st Michigan on the battlefield. The 21st Michigan Infantry was organized at Ionia, Michigan and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and mustered into Federal service on September 9, 1862. This monument was originally topped by bronze eagle.

Michigan
To Her Twenty-First Regiment of Infantry.
Commanded
by Colonel William B. McCreery; Major Seymor Chase.
Lytle’s Brigade, Sheridan’s Division, McCook’s Corps.
This monument marks the spot the position where the Regiment performed its most
important service, during the engagement, Sept. 20th, 1863.
Casualties,
Engaged 311, Killed 16, Wounded 73, Missing 17, Total Loss 106.
On the 19th, the Regiment with its brigade marched from pond spring, coming
into line of battle at Crawfish Springs, advancing to Lee and Gordon’s Mill, that night
moved to the left taking position at the Glenn House, thence to this position about
11 o'clock, Sept. 20th.
In the campaigns of Chattanooga it performed important engineering service.

Short Physical Description
8' x 6' x 10', monument consists of battered, rock-faced base, smooth-fronted midsection with bronze inscription plaque and a high rock-faced top, which incorporates bronze state seal. Originally topped by bronze eagle.
Long Physical Description
Monument located along Glenn-Kelly Road on the Chickamauga Battlefield at map site #230.
Monument is missing a bronze eagle, a bronze relief panel with rifle, and an unidentified bronze piece.
