This war memorial cross is in the centre of Kirkby Stephen, with parking all around. Just north of the Tourist Information Centre.

The names of the fallen are stated on metal plaques around the base of the cross. The letters picked out in white. As with many war memorials there are names from both World Wars of 20th century.
Then local papers carried reports on the progress of both the cross and tablet in church.

Then the Cumberland News on 1 March 1919 writes about a Chancel Screen in Kirkby Stephen parish church.
Then the Cumberland Westmorland Herald on 1 March 1919 writes that Kirkby Stephen War Memorial has four schemes suggested.
Then the Cumberland Westmorland Herald on 3 April 1920 writes that the Market Square site sanctioned for removal of Thompson fountain and replaced by the War Memorial.
The Penrith Observer on 6 April 1920 writes about the Kirkby Stephen War Memorial saying that a memorial fountain is to be removed and erected elsewhere.
Then the Cumberland Westmorland Herald on 10 July 1920 mentions the unveiling ceremony of War Memorial.

The Cumberland Westmorland Herald on 30 September 1922 says that Kirkby Stephen Parish Council received a complaint of the condition of the War Memorial.
