The original house was constructed in 1690. Around 1790 the house was enlarged by an addition. 19th century photos show the building as a substantial clapboard house two and half stories in height. There are large chimneys on either side of the house at the ends.
In 1690, the small house that later evolved into the Peleg Arnold Tavern was built in what is now Union Village by Richard Arnold. The house was one of the earliest homes in North Smithfield..
In 1739 the house was licensed as a tavern to server the travelers along the route from Providence to Worcester. The home was owned by Thomas Arnold, who passed the house onto Peleg in 1765. Peleg was educated at Rhode Island College (Brown University). Hearing of the conflicts in Lexington and Concord, MA, Peleg began recruiting soldiers for the impending conflict. In June 1775, a town meeting was held and the Arnold home was designated as a depository for arms. Peleg obtained the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Continental Army. After the was Peleg served in various state legal capacities, becoming Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court, in 1795 and then Chief Justice of its Supreme Court in 1799.
