Richborough Solar Farm began
supplying electricity to the National Grid in August 2011. It is the South East
England's first large scale commercial solar farm. Set over 35 acres of
previously poor agricultural land alongside the former Richborough Power
Station, it is comprised of 20,400 solar panels capable of supplying the
equivalent electrical needs of 1,300 residential properties. The UK's
Government's recent decision to considerably reduce the state subsidies for
commercial solar farms means in all probability Richborough will not only be the
first large scale commercial solar farm in South East England, but probably the
last for some considerable time.
