Strange, that emperor Josef II. stood behind establishments of the churches in Mala Upa, Velka Upa, Spindleruv Mlyn and Cerny Dul. At the same time he had abolished dozens of cloisters and monasteries in the whole monarchy...
The legend says that while the emperor was visiting Mala Upa he wanted to know why all the highlanders had such nice farm in an otherwise very poor region. He insisted on the answer, and they promised to tell him if he promised to build a church.That´s how he found out, that all the locals earned a little extra by smuggling from the neighboring Prussia.
Between 1789 and 1791 the highlanders built their church, got care of their own rectory, got a school. And soon after a Custom Office and Finance Police :-)
They remained grateful to the emperor, which is commemorated by a plaque on a triumphal arch inside the church.The church is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, whose picture decorates the main altar.
In 1805 the original wooden church was struck by a lightning and burned down, but was rebuilt straight away.
