Politicians, senior civil servants and scientists occasionally defect to the East, but John Drake is tasked with finding out what happens to the hundreds of ordinary people that defect.

Drake takes the place of Robert Fuller, a Communist party member who is about to defect. After a plane and rail journey Fuller, along with two other defectors ends up at Colony 3. Colony 3 is a replica English village called Hamden, staffed by British defectors and run as a school to train spies how to infiltrate Britain.

Fuller is given a job in the Citizens Advice Bureau. He adapts a typewriter with a camera so that he can photograph the spy students as they pass through his office. Once he has all the photos he radios London to get him out. London uses contacts in the Security services in the East to order Fuller’s recall. The leader of the spy school has suspicions and sends his top agent, Robinson, to try to eliminate Fuller on his way back. Robinson tries to kill Fuller but fails. Once back in London Drake has a complete set of spy photos, allowing the spies to be picked up, as and when they arrive in Britain.

Robinson shows Fuller around Hamden. One of the high spots is an old English pub which has a plaque indicating that Charles Dickens used the pub in his book Oliver. The plaque is still outside the pub today, but has moved location slightly since Danger Man filmed here. Originally the sign was to the right of the door, today it is to the left of the door.
