The hike into St. Mary's Lake is a short, steep hike worth the effort.

St. Mary's lake fills with the runoff from the nearby snow and St. Mary's Glacier. The area was originally settled by miners who found gold in the area. The nearby town of Alice was named from the wife of George Taylor who had worked the property prior to the Alice Mining Company. R.O. Phillips, the president of the Alice Mining Co., was also the secretary of the Lincoln Land Co., a subsidiary of Burlington Railroads. (excerpted from (

This is a very popular hike during the summer months. (

visit link) for a detailed explanation of the trail. The lake is only available during the summer months-it is frozen over in the winter. One could snowshoe or cross-country ski into the area if so desired. The altitude of the lake is 10,696 ft (3,260 m). Skiers and snowboarders often ski on the glacier during the summer months.
Parking is only at the trail heads built by the local residents and there is a fee. Do not park on the narrow roads or the residents will have your vehicle towed.
