The IRA bombed the Royal
Marines School of Music at 08:27am on the morning of September 1989. The bomb
destroyed the recreational centre as well as levelling the 3 story accommodation
building alongside. Most of the Royal Marines staff who used the building were
already out on the parade ground when the explosion occurred. 10 personnel died
at he scene, one died of his wounds almost a month later, with 21 other staff
were seriously wounded by the blast.
This small Memorial Garden is
virtually out of sight of passing members of the public, tucked away amongst the
new buildings on the site of the former North Barracks. There isn't even a road
sign/finger post to tell visitors they are passing this poignant memorial. All that
can be seen from the road is the remaining gable wall of the former barrack
Chapel, itself destroyed by fire caused by vandals in 2003. The site is owned
and maintained by Dover District Council.
The Memorial Garden is
alongside a small free car-park off Canada Road, Walmer, opposite the
appropriately named Green Beret Public House.
