This German one-man submarine, from World War II, is on display on the floor of the museum's main hall.
I have been advised that the submarine is now at IWM Duxford so am retiring [LEGACY] this WM. Thanks to Benchmark Blasterz for the update.

This submarine is in the main hall of the museum. The plaque, for the exhibit, reads:
"Biber German One-Man Submarine.
The smallest submarine in the German navy during the Second World War.
The Biber (Beaver) was hastily developed in the spring of 1944 to help meet the threat of an Allied invasion and to carry out attacks on coastal shipping. The craft were first used operationally on 29-30 August 1944 against ships of the invasion fleet in the Bay of the Seine. Neither this operation nor subsequent efforts achieved any significant success. Although 324 Bibers were delivered, they never posed a real threat to the Allies because of basic technical flaws and the inadequate training of crews.
This vessel, Biber No 90, was found sinking 49 miles to the north east of Dover on 29 December 1944. The crewman had died from carbon monoxide poisoning, having failed to close the engine exhaust system properly. The craft was taken in tow by HMS Ready but it sank close to the entrance to Dover harbour. It was raised and subjected to extensive trials by the Royal Navy.
