The surviving Roman lighthouse (or Pharos), is
one of two that were built by the Romans shortly after their invasion of Britain
in 43AD. It stands on the eastern heights of Dover within the fortification of
Dover Castle. Alongside is St Mary in Castro Church, which used the lighthouse
as a bell tower in the 13th century. The lighthouse stands around 25m in height
and is modelled on one built for the Roman Emperor Caligula's fleet at Boulonge-
sur- Mer in 40AD. It's twin was situated on the Western Heights, but what
remained was buried beneath The Drop Redoubt site in the 1860's. the remains
were known as the 'Devil's Drop of Mortar' and had been the traditional site of
the investiture of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.
The site is managed by English Heritage and an
entrance fee to the grounds of Dover Castle is required ( see
