Long Description:
Situated in the geothermal Rotorua region, the lake lies in the Okataina Caldera and was formed about 7000 years ago. Geothermal springs exist on the eastern shore of the lake. Lake Okataina has no surface inlets or outlets and the water level fluctuates, over the past 30 years the level of the lake has risen and fallen in a range of about 5 metres.
Lake Okataina is completely encircled by native forest with one road leading to the sandy lake edge, boat ramp, parking area and private Lodge. At the end of the road there is a large sandy beach, a massive grassed area for picnics and a walking track leads around the lake.
Lake Okataina is widely regarded as a premiere fishing destination. This is due largely to the abundance of rainbow trout that can be found here.
