This statue of the goddess is found in the corner of Wat Yai (Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, in full). This is the major wat of Phitsanulok, with a plethora of interesting items and a long history.
The statue resembles the other statues of Guanyin I have seen in Thailand. I would estimate the statue to be 4m high. The goddess stands in a small garden sculptured area, and seems just somewhat isolated, in corner of the wat grounds, by herself.
Gyanyin is revered in eastern Asia as a protective, kind and caring female figure, both by Buddhists, who perceive her to be an enlightened one—a bodhisattva, and by Hindus, who perceive her to be a Hindu deity. It is not uncommon for a statue of Guanyin to be so placed that she gazes protectively over a Thai city, as she is here.
While Guanyin is revered by all, it has been my experience that she places a larger role in the devotions of women than men. Pregnant women, older women, women in need, turn to Guanyin for aid and assistance—the "Goddess of Mercy".
In Thailand she is usually depicted in white robes, though here she is golden. The form of her name varies widely in south east Asia, but, from what I have seen, her distinctive appearance is always recognisable.
