The mosaic was completed in 1993 and I've probably driven or ridden or walked past this mosaic a hundred or more times since then, and never stopped to take a photo before.

The mosaic is described on a plaque on the wall as follows:

"A Dreamtime Story in Mosaic Tiles

Birth Of The Darling Range

Many, many thousands of years ago the Aboriginal people of the South West lived and hunted along a great river. There were no hills and valleys in those days, only flat land where they could see for miles and miles. The men and their families used to go for miles into the desert to hunt for food where they would stay for months and then return with plenty of food for everyone.

The Aborigines also had a great big snake, he was their friend and the old people would talk to the snake in their language and he would understand. The children also loved the snake and would climb on his back, he did not mind, he liked children. The snake was well looked after, he was never short of food because the tribes would make sure that he was well fed.

Then one day all the tribes went for their walkabout into the desert for food where they stayed for many months. In the meantime their friend the snake ran out of food and became very sick and as the tribe arrived back home from their walkabout they were very sad to find their friend the snake very sick. The old people tried to feed and help him and the children were very upset and cried.

Finally night came and everyone went to sleep. In the morning when everyone was awake there was no snake, all they could see was this great long row of hills. The children were crying, and the old people told them not to cry because their friend the snake had died and turned himself into the long row of hills.

When he died he was thinking of us and now we don't have to go into the desert anymore to hunt for food, everything is all right here thanks to our friend the snake.

And my friends that is how the Darling Range was born.

Designed by Aboriginal Artisans - Noel Morrisson, Stan Masters, Paul Walley, Dave Kickett and Gerald Fogarty, with coordination by artist John Burgess.

Thanks to Kelmscott Tile Centre, Crosby Tiles and TAFE Thornlie for their assistance.

This is a Community Arts Project Presented by the Mayor & Councillors of the City of Gosnells."
