The Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens are situated just south of Batemans Bay. Admission is free although there is a donation box where you can show your appreciation.
Development of the gardens commenced in 1988 when Forests NSW donated 42 hectares of partially forested land. The cleared section was utilised for the visitors centre, a cafe & nursery. In 1994 a bushfire caused significant damage but volunteers perceived & the gardens were officially opened in the Spring (September) of 2001.
The gardens feature the regions varying flora & there are 6 walks that take you through the various sections, two of which are suitable for disabled access. Walks 3 & 4 are 2 kilometres in length & take you through natural forest with one passing a four hundred year old spotted gum, the oldest tree in the gardens. The others take you through man made features such as an arboretum, xeriscape garden, dune garden, sensory garden & several rainforests along Deep Creek.
I visited on one of the few hots days this Summer but you are shaded by tall trees & it is quite soothing in the sections along Deep Creek. If visiting in the warmer months bring a bottle of water & a wide brimmed hat. The gardens abut Deep Creek Dam & there is a dam viewing platform beside track 4.
Free guided walks are run on Sundays at 11am & groups can book walks at other times.
The gardens are open Wednesday to Sunday & every day during school holidays. They are closed on Christmas Day & Good Friday.
