Was chosen as its location because the buildings were already available in the park after the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona (1888). It opened the day of the Mercé, patron saint of Barcelona, in the year 1892 and the first animals that came from the private collection Lluís Martí i Codolar had on his farm called "The Old Farm," which was in Horta. This gave the animals to the Barcelona City Council, which approved its accommodation in the grounds of the park. The zoo has three objectives: conservation, research, and education.
