In Government Springs Park, just northeast of the Performing Arts Pavilion, stands a concrete pillar approximately four feet high, with a slanted top. A bronze plaque is mounted on this angled top, which honors a ten year old boy who was a real hero. The plaque reads:

In Memory of
ROBERT LEE OWENS
1953 ~ 1963
Who was Awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission
Bronze Medal for Heroism in Giving his Life
in Government Springs Lake to Save a Friend
