Opened in November 1998, is owned by the Science and Development Foundation, an organization that also manages. It was founded by the Municipality of Porto and the University of Porto. The scientific management is the responsibility of the Center for Astrophysics, University of Porto.
The design of the building is designed by the architect Jose Manuel Soares. Its facilities include a screening room with a dome, an auditorium with capacity for 60 seats, a astroteca, a foyer that serves as space for holding events, a shop and a cafeteria.
