The mosaics form the seat back for two very long benches, I've collaged them into two images to make the imagery visible.
The mosaic on the first bench shows the aquatic life common to the Canning River which flows beside Centennial Pioneer Park, and the second bench depicts the Waugal or Rainbow Serpent.
The first image I've included shows the two benches in their entirety, while the second image shows closer views of the aquatic life in the first bench. A third image shows a closeup view of one of the fish. The mosaic of the Waugal or Rainbow Serpent doesn't lend itself to closer view as it is a single stylised snake shape.
The staple protein of the Nyoongar, the indigenous people of the Swan Coastal Plain, was obtained predominantly from fish, aquatic reptiles and crustaceans found in the rivers, lakes, wetlands and coastal estuaries stretching from Moore River to Mandurah, which were said to have been created in the Dreaming by the Waugal or Rainbow Serpent, a creative totemic being and protector of the environment.
The water landscape was crucial to the survival of the Nyoongar, and every spring and gnamma hole was named and protected from draining, and the spiritual journey of the Waugal as it moved throughout the coastal plain towards the ocean was mirrored by an understanding of the system of underground streams connecting the wetlands to the rivers and ocean.
