This marker for the
72nd Indiana Regiment Infantry is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This is one of two markers to the 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry Regiment on the battlefield. The 72nd Indiana Infantry was organized at Lafayette, Indiana and mustered in for a three year enlistment at Indianapolis, Indiana on August 16, 1862. The regiment served as mounted infantry from March 17, 1863 to November 1, 1864.

This regiment was engaged on Friday, September 18th at Alexander’s
Bridge where assisted in holding the enemy in check until late in the
afternoon; then withdrew to the east line on the Viniard Farm.
took position Saturday, September 19th, on the west line of Viniard Farm by
order of General Rosecrans in person, assisting in the line all day
Against repeated assaults from the enemy. Engages Sunday, the 20th,
about 12 M. with the brigade, which charged the enemy at Widow Glenn’s
House and drove him back about three-fourths of a mile. At 1 P.M. retired
from the field under orders.

The marker contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description
9' x 7' x 15', the monument is a squat, smooth-faced obelisk set on a stepped base. Shaft has an inscription, is broken by a projectingrock-faced band and incorporates a bronze state seal at the top.
