At the site of this broken column monument lies the departed William H. Gaines. The grave is located in the old section of the historic Warrenton Cemetery. The cemetery has graves that date back to the 1700s. Many Civil War dead are buried here. William H. Gaines inscription on the monument is:
William H. Gaines.
Born August 29, 1856.Is not
Died January 9, 1909.
To live in hearts.
we leave behind.
Is not to die.

The column has a carved leaf wreath around the coloumn.
Mr. Gaines lived 53 years of age.
Mr. Gaines was born 3 years before the raid of John Brown and abolishonists at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The Civil War would begin in 1861.
