The 1878 Yellow fever epidemic caused over 20,000 deaths throughout the entire lower Mississippi river region. Yellow fever had always had outbreaks in the south Louisiana region. Major outbreaks occurred in 1853, 1873, 1878 and the last outbreak occurred in 1905.

This memorial remembers the nameless victims which are buried in this historic cemetery from the 1878 outbreak. Over 100 are buried here.
