"The work was commissioned to mark the reopening of Blackpill Lido in August 2000. As the work is situated by the play area it was intended that children should be able to make tunes from the birds. They can 'Twang' the feathers of the nesting bird and 'Bat' the tubes of the bird about to take flight using either flip flops or sticks. The Osprey is Swansea's civic emblem.
The scheme was jointly funded by the Welsh Tourist Board, the European Regional Development Fund and the City and County of Swansea.
The designers & sculpturs, Urban Strawberry Lunch, were formed in 1988 and are based in Liverpool. They make and play all of their own musical instruments, largely from things that people have thrown away. They are also involved with Sound Sculpture projects such as Musical Ospreys at Blackpill Lido"
