The Wetumpka Light Guards were part of the 3rd Alabama Infantry which was raised from the area. This monument was erected in 1931 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of Confederate Veterans. It was rededicated in 1991. The site was chosen because it was the departure point for the troops.
The text of the plaque reads:
To the memory of
The Wetumpka Light Guard
and Other Confederate Soldiers
from this vicinity who shouldered arms and
marched to the front in 1861 in defense of
their rights, their homes and their Southland.
Dedicated by the John D. Gordon Chapter, U. D. C.
and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
