It is the seat of a municipality with 142.17 km ² and 11,772 inhabitants (2011), divided into nine parishes. The municipality is bordered to the northeast and east by the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, by Bombarral south, southwest by Lourinhã, west and northwest of Peniche is in the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Contrary to what one might think, the name does not derive from Óbidos parónima deaths, but oppidum the Latin word, meaning 'fortress', 'walled city'.Around it stands the Roman settlement of Eburobrittium.

Have been taken from the Moors in 1148, and received the first letter of a charter in 1195, under the reign of King Sancho I. Obidos was part of the dowry of several queens of Portugal, including Urraca of Castile (wife of Alfonso II), Queen Santa Isabel (wife of King Dinis), Philippa of Lancaster (wife of John I), Eleanor of Aragon (wife of D. Duarte), Leonor of Portugal (wife of John II), among others.

In 1527, 161 people lived in the village, which corresponds to about one tenth of the population of the municipality. The area walled was already at that time identical to current, ie 14.5 ha.

Obidos was born the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, formerly called Caldas de Óbidos (changing the determinative was due to the seasons he passed there the Queen Leonor).

The February 16, 2007, the castle of the city received the diploma of a candidate as one of the seven wonders of Portugal.
