German shepherds were often used by the military and served as bomb search dogs. When the troops left Vietnam, the handlers came home without their dogs. Not by choice, but by bureaucracy.

Among the patriotic displays behind the library is a lone shepherd.

The dogs' sensitive ears would hear incoming missiles before they reached camps. If the dog dove for a bunker, the smart soldiers followed.
