The Lake Butte Overlook is located about 10 miles east of Lake Junction, about a mile off the East Entrance Road on Lake Butte in Yellowstone National Park. At the overlook there is an interpretive sign titled “Water Wilderness.” Across the bottom of the sign is an image with various locations identified.
Text of sign:
“You are looking south across thirty miles of water into ann area farther from a road than any place inn the lower 48 states. Except for Grant Village there is no significant development between here and Jackson, 100 miles south. Grant Village - the cluster of buildings at the lake’s edge - is open for a few months in summer. A park road traces the western shore. These exceptions only underscore the vastness of the scene.
Windfalls of spruce and lodgepole pine barricade the lake’s south shore. In winter the area becomes even more isolated as several feet of snow bury forest and frozen lake. Yellowstone Lake may be ice-free only five months a year.”
