This village of Easton was the center of the Ames Shovel Company, which produced much of the shovels in the 1800s used to build the transcontinental railroads and in the gold rush.

Note:
The Ames Shovel Shop became a dominent company in the production of shovels. Ames used much of the profits to benefit the community he resided in. He hired the H. H. Richardson to design several of the buildings, including the Easton Library, and Fredrick Law Olmsted, who designed a Rockaria where the major roads intersect.
