Ryan's use of seeds, pods, fruits and shells was stimulated by plants and fruits seen during her childhood in the Caribbean. The objects nestling in the hollows and depressions of 'Relics' invite the viewer to touch them. They evoke a sense of discovery, or dreaming, and of longing for the exotic or familiar, the past or the future, depending on your point of view. Many of Ryan's works relate to pod or pillow forms, suggesting a soft, warm, nurturing surround, while the relationship of her works to the floor suggests a closeness to the earth and to the organic processes in the world."
