The 1937 American Guide series "Rochester and Monroe County" describes states that this "town square" was given by Elisha Johnson in 1817. This was one of three sites that could have become the center of Rochester, with the development of a courthouse and other public buildings.
Rochester's "town square" ended up on the other side of the river, on the site donated by Col Rocheser, Col Fitzhugh and Maj Carroll at W Main St and S Fitzhugh St. No space remains there that could be construed as a town square, so we are lucky to have this historic place.
