The Morro Sisters are the remnants of volcanic eruptions 22 to 28 million years ago. The volcanic cones have eroded away leaving only the dense hard granite of the plug in the center. Morro Rock was first sighted by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who named it "El Morro" as the shape was like a Moor's turban. The nine sister Morros lined up to the east are: Morro Rock 576 ft, Black Hill 665 ft, Cabrillo Peak 911 ft, Hollister peak 1404 ft, Cerro Romauldo 1306 ft, Chumash Peak 1257 ft, Bishop Peak 1559 ft, Cerro San Luis 1292 ft and Islay Hill 775 ft. The best climb is Bishop Peak. See WM8QBM. Morro Rock and Hollister are off limits for climbers. Morro rock is Periguine Falcon preserve. Hollister Peak is private property.
