Its construction dates back to the thirteenth century, having been donated by the King D. Afonso III (1248-1279) to the Knights of Avis.
It was rebuilt by D. Dinis I of Portugal (1279-1325).
At the time of the War of Restoration of Portuguese independence was surprised, in 1662, by the Spanish forces under the command of D. João de Áustria. Practically unprotected, fell and was destroyed, turning into ruins.
From the original structure, only a portal in Gothic style remains, and some parts of walls and door of the ruined Chapel of São Bento in the interior. These traces were declared as Public Interest on September 29, 1977.
