The Greenwich Observatory has many displays relating to the Prime Meridien- and this globe is displayed to demonstrate time around the Earth.
The placard accompanying the globe reads:
"Time around the world
This globe showing the world in 2006, has lines of longitude, or meridiens, at 15 degree intervals. Each 15 degrees represents one hour's difference in local time. Individual states make political decisions about their own time zones and these do not always match their longitude. For example, China uses a single time zone, though the country spansmore than 60 degrees of longitude."
