A plaque dedicated to Arthur Hewitt in Llandudno. The plaque is located on the former Washington Hotel in the town.
Arthur Hewitt was a local architect who designed many of the outstanding buildings of Llandudno. These included the Palladium (now a J D Wetherspoon pub), Odeon Cinema (now unfortunately demolished) and of course The Washington Hotel to name but a few.
He was also the commanding officer of the 5th battalion (Caernarfonshire) Home Guard.
The plaque in bi-lingual, the Welsh text reads:
Arthur Hewitt 1876 - 1951
Pensaer lleol a chynllunydd llawer o adeiladau sylweddol
yn Llandudno, gan gynnwys Gwesty'r Washington.
Un Unad Heddwch, fe'i penodwud i urdd yr Ymarodraeth Brydeinig
ac yn Ddirprwy Raglaw Sir Gaernarfon yn 1946.
and the English text reads:
Arthur Hewitt 1876 - 1951
Local architect and designer of many significant buildings
in Llandudno, including the Washington Hotel.
A Justice of the Peace, he was appointed the OBE
and Deputy Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire in 1946.
