There has been a lighthouse on this current location since 1730. Built to warn shipping about the treacherous Goodwin Sands that lie just offshore. The lighthouse is also credited by the fact that Guglielmo Marconi during his work on radio waves, received the first ship-to-shore message from the East Goodwin lightship. A moment that changed history.
The current lighthouse was switched off in 1988 and is now managed by the National Trust. Visiting times are limited, and it is closed during winter. As a rule of thumb it is open weekends during most of the year and other days during peak periods.
