The 1870 photograph shows the lighthouse staff spread out on cleared ground in front of the lighthouse with their cottages to one side.
Today the lighthouse has been reduced to rubble & is just visible, the cleared ground as been overtaken by the bush & the cottages are gone.
The lighthouse, built at a location that could not be clearly seen by passing ships, was abandoned in 1889 & then used as target practice by the Australian Navy between 1917 & 1922.
