Legend states that the caves were once 30 metres deep & salt hung like stalactites from the ceiling. Wild creatures & the indigenous people would make use of this rare resource. Today the caves are only a few metres deep & there is no sign of salt.
You gain access to the caves by turning off the Newell Highway at the sign (Burma Rd) & taking the narrow sandy track through the forest to the picnic area, a distance of about 20 kilometres. This is not an all weather road so best not to visit during heavy rain periods. It is also remote so take plenty of water, fuel & tell someone where you are going.
As you drive in & once there, have a look in the surrounding trees as this is Koala habitat & you may be fortunate to see these shy creatures.
The picnic area is only a few metres from the caves & has undercover benches, free BBQs & toilets. There is a walking track to the small Salt Caves dam & a fire tower above the caves (not accessible).
