The coordinates are for the gate 1 entrance to Stanley Park, the original source of the black squirrels of Westfield, where a large population of black squirrels reside all year long. In 1948, Frank Stanley Beveridge, the founder of Stanley Home Products (now Stanhome Inc.) received six black squirrels, from Hubert L. Worell and Alvah (Al) Elzerman of Michigan, as a gift. He released them in Stanley Park; the park he founded as a gift to the people of Westfield. The squirrels have adapted extremely well and have become the dominant squirrels in the park and the surrounding area. They have established populations far and wide in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts; but the largest concentration is in Westfield.
Stanley Park is officially open to the public from 7:00 am until 1/2 hour before sunset daily from the First Saturday in May to the last Sunday in November. Gate 1 is open in winter and the park is available for pedestrian use all year long.
