In 1731, D. João V ordered the start of construction of the Aqueduct of Águas Livres. However, this aqueduct was never fully effective because it provided impure water and sparingly. So, in the second half of the eighteenth century, four aqueducts were built in Caneças: Olival do Santíssimo, Poço da Bomba, Vale da Moura e Carvalheiro.
Until the mid-nineteenth century, Lisbon was a city affected by various epidemics, so the rich citizens paid to water carriers, including the ones from Caneças, to they bring water to their houses.
Caneças and its waters were so much appreciated for its quality and health benefits, which led to the emergence of the fountains, which constitute a landmark of this parish.
Between the years 1928 and 1932, a number of applications were received by the Direcção de Minas e Serviços Geológicos for licensing the operation of four new fountains, built in Caneças.
The first to be built was the Fountain of Fontaínhas, which dates from 1888 and whose start of operation was enacted in 1910.
Its located at the bottom of two masonry walls, within a round arch, topped by the name of the fountain: "Fontaínhas" and a modest ceramic panel with a representation of a brown jug on a green background.
In access way to the fountain, on the left wall, there are nine hand painted tile panels, dating from 1920/30, which relates to the professions of the time.
