La cathédrale Saint-Étienne est la principale église de Limoges et le siège de l'évêché de Limoges. Elle est située au cœur du vieux quartier de la Cité, contiguë aux jardins de l'Évêché et au musée des Beaux-Arts. C'est l'un des édifices les plus remarquables de Limoges, avec la gare des Bénédictins, et le seul monument religieux du Limousin qui soit construit en style gothique homogène.
Sa construction commença en 1273 et ne fut terminée qu'en 1888 par le rattachement du clocher d'origine romane à la nef. La construction commença par le chœur caractéristique du gothique rayonnant du XIIIe siècle qui fut rattaché à la nef romane. Les travaux s'interrompirent une première fois en 1327 faute d'argent. En 1378, la chapelle Saint-Martial et une partie du transept nord furent élevés, le clocher roman fut renforcé par une imposante maçonnerie ; quelques années plus tard, c'est au tour du transept sud. Après la guerre de Cent Ans, les deux premières travées de la nef sont édifiées entre 1458 et 1499. Entre 1516 et 1541, Jean de Langeac fit construire le transept et le portail Saint-Jean, chef d'œuvre limousin du gothique flamboyant. Mais de nouveau, la construction s'arrêta avec la mort de l'évêque et les trois travées de la nef reliant l'église au clocher de la cathédrale romane ne furent élevées qu'à la fin du XIXe siècle.
La cathédrale renferme deux œuvres Renaissance d'une grande qualité : un jubé réalisé sur commande de l'évêque Jean de Langeac, et le tombeau de cet évêque sur lequel sont sculptés des scènes de l'Apocalypse inspirées de Dürer.
Les murs de la crypte romane, fermée au public, possèdent de belles fresques représentant le Christ en gloire.
Quelques peintures médiévales sont encore visibles dans certaines chapelles rayonnantes (représentant notamment des anges musiciens) mais la quasi-totalité présente des fresques du XIXe siècle.

The St. Stephen's Cathedral is the principal church of Limoges and the seat of the Bishopric of Limoges. It is located in the heart of the old quarter of the city, adjacent to the gardens of the Bishop and the Museum of Fine Arts. This is one of the most remarkable buildings of Limoges, the station with the Benedictines, and the only religious monument in the Limousin, which is built in Gothic style uniform.
Construction began in 1273 and was completed in 1888 by linking the tower to the original Romanesque nave. The construction began with the characteristic of the Gothic choir of the thirteenth century, which was attached to the Romanesque nave. The work was interrupted once in 1327 for lack of money. In 1378, the Saint-Martial and part of the north transept were raised, the Romanesque bell tower was reinforced by an imposing masonry few years later, it was the turn of the south transept. The cathedral contains two Renaissance works of great quality: a gallery made ??to order of Bishop Jean de Langeac, and the tomb of this bishop on which are carved scenes from the Apocalypse inspired by Dürer.
The walls of the Romanesque crypt, closed to the public, have beautiful frescoes representing Christ in glory.
Some medieval paintings are still visible in some chapels (including representatives of angel musicians) but almost all of this nineteenth-century frescoes.
