From the National Natural Landmarks web site; "Barfoot Park provides one of the best U.S. examples of Madrean-influenced ponderosa pine forests. The site supports an unusually high amount of plant diversity and includes one of the largest concentrations of well-developed talus slopes in the region, supporting plant and animal species not found elsewhere at the site".
During the summer of 2011 the Chirichua Mountains suffered from a massive forest fire. Barfoot park had minor damage from the fire.
Barfoot park was the site of Camp Victorio a summer camp for the Catalina Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The camp was closed to preserve the plant and animal species.
