Hank Williams, an American singer-songwriter and musician, is regarded as one of the most important country music artists of all time. Williams is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame (1961), Alabama Music Hall of Fame (1985), Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Early Influence (1987), and Native American Music Hall of Fame (1999). Williams' hit, "Lovesick Blues," was inducted into the Recording Academy Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011.
Williams was second to Johnny Cash’s being first in CMT's 40 Greatest Men of Country Music in 2003. He was number 74 on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Hank Williams is ranked first for the decade 1940–1949 for his song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by the website Acclaimedmusic, which collates recommendations of albums and recording artists. Williams’ songs have been covered by artists such as Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ricky Nelson, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Conway Twitty.
35 of Williams’ singles reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart. Eleven of those ranked number one. On April 12, 2010, the Pulitzer Prize Board awarded Williams a posthumous special citation that paid tribute to his "craftsmanship as a songwriter who expressed universal feelings with poignant simplicity and played a pivotal role in transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force in American life." In 2011, Hank Williams: The Complete Mother’s Best Recordings….Plus! was honored with a Grammy nomination for Best Historical Album.
Alan Jackson's 1992 hit Midnight in Montgomery was written about Hank Williams.
