When completed in 1869 the Literary Institute was one of Braidwood's most significant public buildings.

Gold was discovered in the Braidwood district in 1851 & as a consequence, the population expanded resulting in many fine buildings being constructed.
The Institute provided a library & encouragement to the community to educate & improve themselves culturally. The hall upstairs was the venue for many balls & dances. The facade was rendered & parapet constructed during additions in 1891.
The building now houses the local Shire council.
