José Saramago

José de Sousa Saramago (16 November 1922 – 18 June 2010) was a Nobel-laureate Portuguese novelist, poet, playwright and journalist.

Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. More than two million copies of his books have been sold in Portugal alone and his work has been translated into 25 languages.

This centenary olive tree is located in Lisbon downtown, in front of the future headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation. It was relocated from the village of Azinhaga, the birthplace of Saramago, in the commemorations of the 1st anniversary of his death.
